Caught in the spotlight

This was a random and unexpected result when I was experimenting with the camera’s creative modes (grainy film) and self-portraits. I think I accidentally had the flash on full and the aperture really wide. But I think it’s kind of funny: it looks like I ambushed myself as I was coming into the room.

New project

I’ve decided to sew myself a new coat. The idea was for it to be ready for my upcoming winter trip, but like with all plans, things get in the way. I may have to wear my boring old white coat instead. At least it should be ready for winter here.

I have an obsession with teal at the moment, so that’s what I’m going with. 100% wool, of course. Simple design.

It’s my first time making a pattern from Burda Style magazine. My first task was to trace the pieces for my chosen pattern from the pattern sheet onto fresh paper (which is used to cut out the pieces of fabric):

Got them pickles

I spotted some produce at the veggie shop suggestively labelled “pickling cucumbers”. I decided to take them up on that suggestion.
We used a recipe from Stephanie Alexander (the Cook’s Companion), which involved salting them, and soaking them in vinegar and spices. We have several jars now sitting in the fridge. We have to wait 6 weeks until they’re ready, but that means we’ll have pickles waiting for us when we get home from our holiday.

I think we need to top up the vinegar though, perhaps they’re a little thirsty.
I’ve never made gherkins before: I hope they’re even better than the supermarket ones, which tend to be either too sweet, too bland, or too vinegary.
